CHAPTER FOURTEEN - ZACH

I just stare at the TV. Unable to process what I’m looking at.

Part of this is because it’s so horrific. But also because it’s on the fucking TV. Which makes it feel like a movie.

But this isn’t a movie. This is raw footage of a party the three of us were just at, less than two hours ago.

“Holy shit.” Posie breaks the silence. “Holy fucking shit.” She turns and looks at Luke. “It makes sense now.”

“What are you talking about?” I ask.

She looks up at me. “That woman. When I asked her to use the bathroom, I said I had a feminine problem.”

“So?” I say. And I’m not trying to be a dick to her. But I’m still not over the fact that she outed me as Zach Boston to these freaks.

“So?” She sneers back at me. “So I was hinting I was on my period. That’s like… you know, the magic words when you need to use someone’s bathroom and you get the feeling they’re gonna tell you to go jump off a cliff.”

Luke and I just look at each other.

“Well, you wouldn’t know, would you?” Posie is really making a face at me now. “What it feels like to be a woman in need of a bathroom?”

I roll my hand at her. “Can you just get on with the story?”

“Zach,” Luke cautions. “Just be cool.”

“I’m being fucking cool, OK? I just watched a girl get thrown into a bonfire. Excuse me if I don’t have a lot of patience for her bathroom problems.”

Posie and Luke share a look. And you know what? That pisses me off. He’s my boyfriend, not hers. They should not be sharing looks.

“Anyway,” Posie huffs, “it was just an excuse to snoop around.”

“Oh, I get it. Two for the price of one, right? You get the Conners and the Bostons for your stupid Buzz Hollywood article.”

She doesn’t deny it, so I feel a little smug. But then Luke says, “For fuck’s sake, Zach. Let her fucking talk.”

“Thank you.” Posie smiles at him. “But she told this guy to take me there. And she called it the coral bathroom. Which was a literal bathroom. Like… just a bathtub. No toilet or anything.”

She pauses like this is the end of the story.

“So?” And that comes from Luke, so I’m glad I didn’t have to be Captain Obvious this time.

“It was a ritual room,” Posie says.

Zach and I look at each other. Dubious.

“It was! And I was the girl.” She points to the TV.

We all look at the hovering drone footage, then immediately wish we hadn’t. “Jesus Christ, Luke.” I turn away, covering my eyes. “Get that off screen.”

“I want more evidence,” he says. “Might as well get as much as we can while we’re here.”

“My point is,” Posie snaps at us both now, “I was her.”

“You were never her,” I say.

“That woman thought I was. I was this close to being her! If Luke and Chandler hadn’t been there—”

“Hey, I was there too!”

She ignores me and just shakes her head.
